Matthew McConaughey Strips Down Gay Community’s Excitement For ‘Magic Mike’
Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past decade, you know that Matthew McConaughey has a penchant for being shirtless - so it should come as no surprise that he signed on to play a male stripper in Stephen Soderbergh’s Magic Mike.
In the film which hits theatres June 29, Matthew plays Dallas – owner and father figure to a band of male strippers, including Channing Tatum whose life the movie is roughly based around.
The 42-year-old actor recently sat down with The Advocate to talk about the inspiration behind his character, his “wonderfully filthy” strip tease and his appreciation for support from the gay community.
Matthew reveals what inspired his character Dallas from Magic Mike: “I just took off and flew with this guy. I was going for Jim Morrison meets A Clockwork Orange, because he’s like a deity in his own mind.”
Dallas not only acts as the strip club’s emcee in the film, he has his own special strip tease that apparently leaves little to the imagination.
Matthew confessed to having a love for dance: “I love to dance, but I’ve never been a stripper. Channing’s one of the best hip hop street dancers I’ve ever seen and I didn’t want to challenge his style, so I worked on my own strengths. I also knew that my dance had to be the dirtiest. It had to be wonderfully filthy.”
On the matter of his gay fans and their support, Matthew told the magazine: “It’s much appreciated. You know, I have some good friends of my own who happen to be gay and when it comes to gay, straight, or whatever, I’m for anything life-affirmative.”
“You know those World Cup banners about tolerance?” he added. “I always thought that was one short. No, don’t just tolerate me. Understand and accept me.”
