When Vampire Diaries hunk Ian Somerhalder isn't making female fans' hearts flutter as sexy vampire Damon Salvatore, he's a committed environmental activist who lends his time and his famous face to numerous endeavours devoted to protecting Mother Earth.

It was in the latter role that led Ian to head to Washington, D.C. on Tuesday to speak to Congress about the importance of preventing the extinction of the planet's endangered species before it's too late.

Testifying on behalf of his Ian Somerhalder Foundation, the former Lost star spoke before the House Committee on Natural Resources: "Looking around the world at these wildlife," he said, "it’s abundantly clear that humans have benefited from nature in so many ways but have also brought many species to the brink of extinction.”

In a 2012 interview with the Humane Society (one of the causes he supports), the 35-year-old actor explained that no matter how busy his schedule, he always insists on making time to try to make the world a better place. "It may seem hard to find the time and energy to make considerable change, but some of the most monumental change we can make is within our daily consumer habits," he said. "No matter how hectic a day can be, there is always opportunity within our busy schedules to make thoughtful decisions that reflect the changes we want to see in the world."
